COOL SCHOOLS: Delaware Academy celebrates Read Across America Day

Local News

Ringing in Read Across America Day recently, Delaware Academy invited several special guest readers including Captain Jack Sparrow, “The Queen of Reading,” a lion mascot and even NewsChannel 9’s own Farah Jadran.

The Syracuse City School District encouraged students to read more and share their love of reading with their special guests.

“I like reading because it’s educational and it’s fun and you can learn a lot of new things,” said Jalissa Barbosa, a fourth grader at Delaware Academy.

Her classmate Jose Onasiz Matos shares Barbosa’s love of reading as well.

“I like reading because it’s really entertaining,” Onasiz Matos said. “Instead of watching TV I can have an education.”

The event took place on Friday, March 1, but school and district leaders say the boosted interest in reading has been happening year-round.
