COOL SCHOOLS: Liverpool students learn about autism through puppet workshop

Local News

Sally and Carey can add some new friends to their list after a special visit to Willow Field Elementary (WFE). The stars of the Kidspeak Interactive Puppet Workshop, along with representatives from the Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center, recently stopped by WFE to help students foster an understanding and acceptance of individual differences, specifically for children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum and related disorders.

During several special presentations, WFE students had the chance to ask questions and learn more about Sally and Carey, both of whom have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Topics included how they learn, what they like to do, and how they react when they are angry or scared.

The Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center has offered the Kidspeak Puppet Workshop since 2006. The center is funded by the New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities and Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.
