A central New York couple is finally home after their vacation to St. Thomas took a drastic turn with the arrival of Hurricane Irma.
Bill and Tracy Vaughn landed in Syracuse last night after catching a final flight in Atlanta.
They had braved Irma from inside their hotel room and had been stuck there much longer than expected.
The Vaughns, along with 2,000 other people, had to be shuttled to Puerto Rico to catch a flight.
They arrived home a week later than they’d planned.
“At first you don’t really worry about it, because you’ve never been through it,” Bill Vaughn said. “Then when you’re going through it, you’re like this is crazy and when you see the aftermath, you’re like – oh wow! Until you go through it, you never really understand. All you hear about is the hype.”
Hurricane Irma destroyed as much as 90 percent of the island’s power lines and transformers.
Most people living on the St. Thomas aren’t expected to have power for months.
