Couple survives home explosion in WNY

Barre Home Explosion-118809282

The Barre fire chief is calling it a Christmas miracle.

A couple in Barre escaped their home on Wilkins Road right before it exploded at 4 am Sunday.

“You couldn’t even recognize the structure, it was just a ball of fire,” said Barre Fire Chief Jerry Bentley.

Donald and Fonda Carr were not hurt and are now staying with relatives.

“It was a total explosion the house just lit right up and it was just boom, a big burst of fire,” said Fonda Carr.

Barefoot and frightened, they were able to get to their car moments before the entire house collapsed.

“The door would not open. It was jammed. You’ve got the flames coming, so we climbed out the window onto the porch and as I looked back the whole house was totally engulfed in fire,” said Fonda.

Fonda says despite losing all of their belongings, making it out of their house together and unharmed was a Christmas miracle.

Bentley says the cause of the fire is still unclear, but investigators continue to look into it.

No other homes in the area were damaged, but the home and everything inside is gone.

All that is a left is a pile of rubble.

A GoFundMe page is already close to raising its $15,000 goal.
