CORTLAND, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – A portion of I-81 Southbound in Cortland was shut down Saturday morning after a crash involving a vehicle and a tractor trailer. The crash happened around 2:05 a.m.
New York State Police say the vehicle was going the wrong way when it hit the tractor trailer head-on. Troopers say injuries were minor. The drivers of both vehicles were taken to Upstate Medical Center.
More than 50 gallons of diesel fuel from the truck spilled along the roadway. The Department of Environmental Conservation was called in to assist.
As a result of the crash, I-81 Southbound between Exit 11 and Exit 12 (Homer, Cortland, Ithaca) was closed for around five hours. As of 6:59 a.m. the road had reopened to traffic.
The driver of the vehicle has been ticketed for driving the wrong way and more charges are expected.
New York State Police and the Cortland Fire Department both responded to the crash.
