SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — When the Carrier Dome gets a new roof, some season ticket holders are wondering if the stadium will get a new name.
When football season ticket holders went to their mailboxes over the weekend, they found their season ticket packets. But instead of being mailed from the “Carrier Dome,” the return address label simply read “Dome Box Office.”
Inside the envelopes, an information brochure referred to the stadium as the “Syracuse University Dome” or, in some cases, just “the Dome.” The tickets referred to it as “Our House.”
The only reference to Carrier was the website “carrierdome.com.”
A spokesperson for Carrier tells NewsChannel 9 that the company will discuss what happened with Syracuse University.
Season ticket holders are wondering if the removal of the name Carrier from the packets means the “Carrier Dome” name won’t survive the $118 million renovations.
A Syracuse University spokesperson, who also didn’t reference the word “Carrier,” would not directly address the question in her statement to NewsChannel 9.
“We are excited about the new fan experience we are working to create at the Dome. Our $118 million investment will change the face and footprint of the Dome, providing a game-day environment unlike anything our campus community, student-athletes, fans and visitors have had before.”

While the exact reason for the name change on the packets isn’t clear, Syracuse University can expect a call from Carrier, a company spokesperson tells NewsChannel 9.
A year before the Carrier Dome hosted its grand opening and a sell-out crowd in 1980, Carrier’s nearly $3 million donation helped finish the facility.
“Carrier and Syracuse University have enjoyed a long and mutually beneficial partnership dating back to 1979, when Carrier provided the crucial final leg of funding to make the Carrier Dome a reality. In return, the University legally granted the company the right to name its stadium the Carrier Dome in perpetuity. The language in the agreement is clear: Carrier has the right, “To officially name the stadium facility the “Carrier Dome.” Syracuse University officials have made public statements recognizing that the agreement remains in force in a 2009 amendment and again with a marketing agreement in 2018.”
