Rome Fire officials say Peterson’s Exotic Pets in Rome is destroyed after an early-morning fire on Thursday.
Crews were called to 305 N. James Street in Rome at 4:30 a.m.
Firefighters tell NewsChannel 9 that the fire spread to two nearby buildings. Those buildings were damaged.
Some animals were killed in the fire, but investigators have not determined just how many, as they are still trying to get a hold of the owner.
Neighbors tell NewsChannel 9 that the shop carried fish and possibly lizards.
A man in a wheelchair and his service dog were rescued from an apartment upstairs. Both were unharmed.
According to the pet shop’s Facebook page, the business opened in November of 1969.
An early investigation indicates the fire originated in the pet shop.
