UPDATE: One victim confirmed dead, the other critically injured from Burdick Ave. fire

UPDATE: One of the victims injured in the house fire on Burdick Ave last Friday has died as a result of her injuries sustained in the fire. 52-year-old Natasha M. Thomas of Syracuse died Tuesday, Oct. 10, after being found by rescuers unconscious and unresponsive on the second floor of a home at 214 Burdick Avenue on Oct. 6.

Thomas was taken to a local hospital, where she had remained in critical condition since Friday. The second victim rescued from the same fire remains in critical condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A call went out around 2:39 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, from Onondaga County 911 to Syracuse Fire Department for a fire on Burdick Ave., in Syracuse, right off of Turtle St.

At the scene, crews heard that two people might be trapped inside of the two-story-home

Crews went into the home looking for the possible victims, while others stretched a hose inside to put out the fire.

“As they reached the second floor, firefighters encountered thick, blinding smoke, and high heat. A search team from Truck 2 quickly located an unconscious male victim and moved him to the outside of the structure, where crews immediately began administering medical care. As the firefight continued, there were reports of one person still missing,” said Syracuse Fire Department.

They went back into the home and found the second person towards the back of the building. This victim was also unconscious, and was taken out a window and down a ladder, where they were met with paramedics.

“Both patients at this time have been transported to local hospitals from AMR and Syracuse Fire Ambulance. Both are in critical condition. So we’re still waiting for updates on that,” said Syracuse Fire Department Chief, Matt Craner.

According to the chief, they were the only two people in the house. Exact ages have not been released.

Syracuse Fire Investigators were on the scene, working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The second floor of the building sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage. The first-floor apartment of the building also sustained smoke damage.

A total of 43 Fire Department personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff. Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response, National Grid, and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
