Fisherman dies after falling out of boat into Oswego River

OSWEGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A man has died after the boat he was in hit an object in the water.

Two men from Pennsylvania, ages 70 and 71, fell into the Oswego River on Thursday after the boat they were in struck an object in the water.

Two off-duty Oswego City Police Officers were in the area fishing as well, and rushed to the scene to try to assist the men. 

The Oswego Fire Department Marine units were dispatched to the scene to help and pulled both men from the water.

The 71-year-old man was able to hold onto his boat and stay above water while the 70-year-old man was underwater for several minutes. Both victims were rushed to the hospital, but the 70-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 71-year-old man was treated and released.

Both men were wearing life jackets at the time.
