Nyland the dog is going to graduation Friday with his foster mom, high school senior Julia Smith. Not only does he have his own cap for the ceremony, but he also has a portrait in the Texas school’s yearbook.

The puppy-in-training became a part of the Cy-Fair High School senior’s life last summer, after she decided to raise a guide dog for the blind, KTRK reported. They’ve been together 24-7, even during Smith’s classes.

Nyland was popular with the other students. He attracted attention in the hallways and at football games and other events.

“As soon as his vest comes off and he’s back to being a normal dog, he’s a wild child,” Smith told KTRK.  “Raising a dog is awesome, but it’s more hard work than it looks.”

In July, the Smith family will have to say goodbye to the pup. Smith’s mother, Michelle, said it’s not going to be easy.

“We’ve all grown really attached to him, so parting ways is going to be really hard,” she said.
