Hundreds expected at event for CNY families fighting opioid addiction

Local News

Families fighting to overcome opioid addiction can find help at a community resource night on February 27 at West Genesee High School.

The event, organized by the Camillus Community Coalition on Substance Abuse, will bring together about a dozen agencies that specialize in nearly every facet of addiction, from treatment and recovery to legal resources and support groups.

Presenters include NewsChannel 9’s Christie Casciano and Tammy Palmer, along with Dr. Ross Sullivan from Upstate University Hospital and Beth Hurny from Prevention Network.

Families will have time to chat with experts at stations throughout the school’s gym.

Agencies on the list include Upstate New York Poison Center, Camillus Police Department, Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare, Crouse Hospital, Prevention Network, Tully Hill Chemical Dependency Treatment Center, The Town Shop (youth center in Camillus), McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center, Nar-Anon Family Groups, Families Together in New York State, Whole Mental Wellness, and Professional Counseling Services.

Camillus police will also collect any unused or expired medication for safe disposal.

Experts say prolonged or inappropriate use of prescription opioid medications increases the risk that someone will try heroin after access to the prescribed drug is cut off.

Parents are encouraged to get rid of old prescriptions immediately to prevent access to family members who may be vulnerable to addiction.

Abuse of heroin and other opioids has been linked to a rising number of deaths in Onondga County.

With the impact reaching every corner of Central New York, organizers of the upcoming resource night expect hundreds of people to attend.

There is no charge to attend and free child care is being offered.

The event is scheduled from 6:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m. at West Genesee High School on Monday, February 27.
