Longtime Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney has announced that she will be stepping down to take a position as Chief Operating Officer at SUNY ESF.

The announcement came at a press conference early Monday morning.

If the county Legislature doesn’t name a successor, Deputy County Executive Bill Fisher will fill in.

Fisher or the successor will serve until elections in 2019.

County Legislative Chair Ryan McMahon is looking to replace Mahoney.

McMahon said if he is appointed to Onondaga County Executive, he would run for the position next November.

It appears McMahon has the support of the majority of the county legislature.

Mahoney will start at ESF on Nov. 1.
