LaFayette third grader starts ‘Backpack Buddies’ to help fellow students

Local News

Rylee Andersen is like most third graders at Grimshaw Elementary in the LaFayette Central School District.

She enjoys playing with friends and loves music class. But what might be different is her drive to take a little idea and turn it into a large effort.

“I saw this little boy on TV and he gave homeless people backpacks full of food and supplies that you need,” Rylee shared. “So, I thought: ‘why don’t I just help my school and my community and give them supplies that they need and backpacks because some people can’t afford them.'”

She came up with the name, “Backpack Buddies.”

Quickly supplies including pencils, markers, glue sticks and scissors for Backpack Buddies started piling up.

To get things started, Rylee wrote a letter to her principal that led to another letter that went out to all families at the end of school last year.

“A third-grader, I mean who has a third-grader who’s just that willing to put herself out there and get the help and support from her parents as well as her classroom teacher?” said Jennifer Blossey, principal at Grimshaw Elementary. “It’s a great thing for a student, a young student to do.”

More than 40 backpacks were filled with supplies with items still coming in, according to Blossey.

The program also helped a few students outside of the school district.

Blossey says any parent who believes their child would benefit from a backpack or some school supplies can call the Grimshaw Elementary front office at (315) 677-3152 or email her at jblossey@lafayetteschools.org.
