A class of Liverpool High School seniors just completed a month-long course at St. Joseph’s Hospital, allowing them to explore the medical field and learn the basics about saving lives.
The summer program is called “High Tech with a Human Touch” and has been offered to Liverpool seniors for 27 years.
The aim of the course is to give students interested in the medical field the opportunity to see if it is a career path they’d like to pursue.
“I shadowed a bunch of groups in the NICU all the way to the ER,” said 17-year-old Katrina Bragan.
In addition to shadowing hospital staff for nearly two weeks, on Thursday the seniors had the chance to get hands-on experience listening to the heart and lungs, administering CPR, and giving fluids to mannequins at the St. Joseph’s Nursing School.
“They are really life-like… it made me nervous,” admitted Brianna Kovarik, 17. “It gets easier as you go.”
