Madison County opting out of bag fee

Local News

MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — In Madison County, they won’t be charging an extra fee when the plastic bag ban takes effect next March.

The new law allows counties and cities to charge a five-cent fee on paper bags.

Local governments would get to keep two cents per bag and the remaining three cents would go to the state’s environmental protection fund.

The Madison County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to opt out of imposing that fee, saying if the state wants to impose a fee, they should do it themselves and that they’ve handed out thousands of reusable bags to neighbors and will continue to do so.
