A Chenango County man has been found guilty of killing his adopted son with special needs has been found guilty of murder and arson.

Ernest Franklin killed Jeffrey Franklin by strangling him and then setting their home on fire to cover the crime, according to investigators.

An autopsy determined that the fire did not cause the 16-year-old’s death.

Prosecutors say Ernest Franklin and his wife, Heather, watched the critically acclaimed movie “Manchester by the Sea” on Feb. 29, 2016, which may have inspired the murder.

In the movie, the main character accidentally starts a fire that kills his children– but is not charged.

The Chenango County District Attorney’s Office believes that’s where the Franklins got the idea and they executed their crime that evening.

Heather Franklin is also facing murder charges. Her trial will begin in the coming weeks.
