Marcellus High School is mourning the loss of a rising junior and member of the wrestling team, 16-year-old Matthew Norris, killed in a crash early Sunday morning.
Marcellus Schools Superintendent Michelle Brantner tells NewsChannel 9:
We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our beloved students. As a school community our hearts go out to Matt’s family and friends. We will be solidifying arrangements in the morning to provide support for members of the students body and staff who are in need during this difficult time. Information will be shared via the school district website. We ask that you keep Matt’s loved ones in your thoughts.
The school district hopes to offer counselors to its students, despite the district being on summer break.
Norris was killed when his van hit a tree.
A person living on South East Townline Road heard the crash just after 4:00 a.m. Sunday and called 911.
First responders found the van off the road, the only vehicle involved. Norris, who was driving, was the only person inside the vehicle.
There’s a steep hill and sharp curve on South East Townline Road not far from Collins Road.
A portion of South East Townline Road was closed several hours to traffic while deputies investigate.
Deputies believe speed and driver inexperience likely played a role in the crash.
