Mayor may request state prison inmates for sandbag duty in Fair Haven

Local News

The Cayuga County village of Fair Haven is feeling the threat of rising water levels along Lake Ontario.

Mayor James Basile may want the National Guard and state prison inmates to chip in with sandbag duty.

He says volunteers have filled about 20,000 sandbags over the past week and fatigue is setting in, but there’s no time for breaks.

Now, he wants the county’s emergency management office to bring in reinforcements.

“With the rising water, it’s now encroaching not just on homes, there are some businesses also that have built sandbag levees,” Basile says. “The question is…how high can we go before it is not going to work?”

Basile says he’s hoping to have those reinforcements in place as early as Tuesday.

Experts predict water levels will continue to rise throughout the month of May.

Relief from the current rain predictions in the forecast may not arrive until the middle of this week.
