A heartwarming homecoming for a Central New York military veteran. NewsChannel 9’s Jennifer Sanders takes us to Baldwinsville where, with the turn of a key, Army Sergeant Michael Milliman’s life changed forever.
BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — “It really lets you know that you’re not alone.”
Since you haven’t walked in his shoes, you’ll never know what this day means to Michael Milliman, a retired sergeant from the U.S. Army, who is still battling the invisible scars of war.
“Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. This is such a special day for me,” Milliman said.
An emotional and special day for each of them as well. For many, this is their first time meeting Milliman, but they’ve spent the past four months building his new home.
With the turn of a key, he unlocked more than just his home.
“This means to me a new start, a new beginning to the next chapter of my life,” Milliman said.
The first stop was the kitchen, where there was a very special surprise: Peanut butter and Nutella, to make it feel even more like home.
If you look at the downstairs area before the renovations, you don’t realize it’s even the same place.
Heading upstairs, Milliman gets to see his new bedrooms and bath. In the master bedroom, photos of his family are already set up.
But this moment was probably the most special of all: When he met with Christopher Ouzts.
Ouzts is the owner of C&C Renovations. He’s a disabled vet, so for him, this project was personal.
“Both of us have PTSD. I was injured multiple times in combat. I just know how hard it is and I was able to find a way to build myself back up and I’m hoping this is a step forward for him,” Ouzts said.
“I’m finally getting to a comfortable spot now and its time to turn the page and start the next journey,” Milliman said.
A new start and a new home. The perfect beginning to a new chapter of Milliman’s life.
Sergeant Milliman’s home was donated mortgage-free by the Military Warriors Support Foundation in partnership with Bank of America.
