The price for trash pick up in the Towns of Tully, Fabius, LaFayette, and Pompey is going up.
A new $325 rate will apply to everyone with a residential property in the Southern Onondaga Trash System or SOTS.
The sudden closure of Feher Rubbish Removal back in May left SOTS and its 6,000 neighbors out of luck. The four-member SOTS board was able to temporarily sign a contract with Dependable Disposal, but recently the board voted 3 to 1 in favor of a new three-year contract with Dependable, that included the price hike.
Until last week neighbors say they weren’t made aware of the new contract or given a chance to share their opinions. Mailers were sent out to residents in the four towns, but many people at a meeting Monday night say they took them for junk mail.
The meeting Monday was simply a chance for the SOTS board to explain new details about the new $1.8 million contract.
The board put the contract out for bid. Syracuse Haulers was the other bid they received, but it was $15,000 more than Dependable Disposal.
The $325 cost will be included in people’s taxes and includes two bins for trash and recycling — 95 or 65 gallons. Extra bins cost an additional $22 per month. Neighbors are also not allowed to opt out even if they previously did so.
Kay and Bill Pearman who live in LaFayette said after the meeting if they had the option to opt-out they would take it. Bringing their trash to OCRRA in Liverpool would have cost them a little under half the new amount.
The board would not provide a statement regarding why a public meeting was not held but gave this statement.
“We are so appreciative of everyone who came out and gave us their input.”
Melanie Vilardi, Fabius Town Supervisor/SOTS Board Member
Neighbors voted to create SOTS back in 2003 with 74% approval.
