New sinus balloon procedure for Chronic Sinusitis sufferers

Local News

Bruce Bezanilla broke his nose in a car accident 25 years ago, and has had sinus trouble since.

He suffers from terrible head aches, bad breath and this spring, his tooth started hurting. Antibiotics weren’t working and every year his symptoms get worse.  Eventually it started to affect his quality of life.

“I did a little research and I saw this balloon operation and I thought ‘man that would be great if I can get that and it would alleviate my problems,” Bezanilla said.

So today Bezanilla is having a sinus balloon dilation. His doctor says this fast, non invasive office procedure is better than surgery.

Dr. Jesse Ryan is an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for the University of Otolaryngology Associates. He said, “The balloon is a small device that has a 6mm balloon attached to it and this gets gently inserted into the sinus passages ways. It’s inflated to 6mm and that helps crack open little eggshell bone and open the natural drainage passage ways of the sinuses.”

After Bezanilla’s procedure is finished, he should start experiencing relief immediately.

Tammy Ellis of Constantia had the procedure done and she said her quality of life has changed dramatically.

“In 24 hours, the pressure was out of my head no headaches. I was very impressed. I’m still very impressed because I have a horse and I go to the barn and everything is just so much better,” Ellis said.

Doctor Ryan says some patients still need to go to the operating room but he is able to change the lives of most right in his office.
