October means flu season: How to fight the flu early on

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - It’s the official start to flu season, which means it's time to get your flu shot.

The Onondaga County Health Department reminding people to use the ‘Three P's’ to help keep sickness at bay.

Those “3 P’s” are:

  • Protection: Wash your hands often and properly.
  • Prevention: If you’re sick, stay home. Armor up and get vaccinated.
  • Prescription: Make sure you’re getting treated by your healthcare provider.

Every year the message stays the same: get your flu shot-- the earlier the better.

It’s never too late to get it.

If you aren’t a fan of the flu shot, flu mist is back, but there are limitations on those who should get it.

The flu shot or flu mist should be available at your doctor's office and most pharmacies

The Onondaga County Health Department is offering the vaccine to those who are uninsured or underinsured.

Like each flu season, the Centers for Disease Control will track confirmed flu cases.

The State Health Department will also send out weekly flu trends now through May.
