Syracuse police officers Darrin Ettinger and Jeremy Decker have been named as the two officers called to a drug deal complaint which ended in a woman being fatally shot.

Officer Ettinger told 32-year-old Sahlah Ridgeway to drop an illegal sawed-off shotgun that she was carrying and fled with upon seeing officers at 1313 Butternut St. — Kimton Place Apartments.

Police say Ridgeway refused to drop the weapon after being told multiple times to do so. Officer Ettinger, fearing for his life and his partner’s, fired his weapon and hit Ridgeway.

Ridgeway was pronounced dead at Upstate University Hospital.

Both officers are 10-year veterans of the Syracuse Police Department, and neither of them were injured during this incident, police said.

Police have not released specific details about the shooting and did not disclose how many shots were fired.

This investigation is still active and ongoing.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Syracuse Police Department at 442-5222. All calls will be kept confidential.
