Onondaga Co. looks to build on strong tourism growth in 2017

Onondaga County visitors spent approximately $865 million locally in 2017, according to a Tourism Economics report released by New York State.

Tourism generated $66.5 million in local taxes in 2017 for Onondaga County (1.4 percent increase from 2016).

Destiny USA, Embassy Suites at Destiny, Syracuse University Athletics and Onondaga County Monday announced a new partnership to further promote and market the area to tourists.

Embassy Suites at Destiny becomes the official hotel of SU Athletics.

The partnership also formalizes a new marketing strategy with incentives to bring and encourage longer stays by tourists to the shopping center and SU games.

Visit Syracuse President & CEO Danny Liedka says, “It’s easy to identify the larger conventions, they certainly stand out, but I think Syracuse is becoming more and  more of a leisure destination, there’s so much to do here. Regionally we’re located ideally to see all the great attractions an hour in every direction.”

Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says increased sales tax from tourists is helping keep local property taxes down.

Mahoney presents her 2019 budget plan on Friday.
