Onondaga County expected to host ‘World Carp Classic’

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — One of the world’s most popular carp fishing tournaments will be making its way to Onondaga County.

Sources tell NewsChannel 9, in either 2021 or 2022, the World Carp Classic fishing tournament is expected to be held in Baldwinsville.

It will be the first time the World Carp Classic is held in the United States.

An official announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

Baldwinsville currently hosts two major tournaments on the Seneca River every year. They are the Wild Carp Classic, which kicks off this week and The Ed French Open, which is held in October.

Organizers say they both sell out within days.

For both tournaments, teams have come from Israel, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, UK, and Canada just to fish the Seneca River carp. Organizers say over the past decade the Seneca River has gained the reputation for being the best carp fishing tournament venue in North America.

“To have the championship here, it would be a multi-million dollar impact,” said Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon. “We would have folks coming in well before the tournament to scout out some of the best waters in North America for this type of fishing.”
