OSWEGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) – The water level on Lake Ontario is well above what it should be at this time of year. In recent years, high water levels have taken their toll on homes and businesses.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will giving to $5 million to help Oswego take care of areas damaged by flooding. At least $2 million should be coming this summer.
“So, we have to try to repair the damage that’s already been done,” said Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow. “So, we have to try to repair in such a way that where it is not susceptible to this damage again because it looks like the water is going to be high again this summer we’re already a foot above where we usually are.”
Mayor Barlow says there may be some noticeable changes to the design of the Riverwalk area in Oswego with the funding and the city would add more protection for the Harbor Trail project at Breitbeck Park to prevent shoreline erosion.
