Local News

Syracuse Police are investigating an incident that happened at Conan’s Gym early Monday morning. According to Police, two men broke the front window to the gym, and threw something inside, then saw flames. They then left the scene.

“I’m heartbroken. This is gym is my child. This is my life and I feel the pain as if someone hurt my children. That is how I feel about this,” said Owner Derek Pollastro.

He says he feels lucky to be alive. He lives in the basement of the building and if it weren’t for neighbors calling him to wake him up after seeing the fire, he may not have woken up.

“My biggest fear was the floor coming down on top of me,” he said. Thankfully, first responders were passing by and stopped to help.

“I just found out today, and I didn’t even know this, two EMT’s happened to drive by and saw it was on fire,” Pollastro said. “They used a fire extinguishers and tried to keep it under control until the fire department came.”

Due to the damage in the front, members have to use the backdoor. Some of them have even brought equipment and helped with the clean-up. As police continue to investigate, Pollastro is offering a $2,000 reward for anyone who has any information about what happened.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Syracuse Police Department at (315) 442-5222. All calls will be kept confidential.
