After dedicating more than 60 years to writing, an 88-year-old Parish woman has fulfilled her dream of publishing her first novel.
Kay Perham is an artist and the author of “The Runner”.
Perham started writing her book several decades ago about a boy who tried to escape his secret past, but things took an unlikely turn.
“A boy who had nothing except a mother who was a drug person and forced him into it and eventually she got killed,” Perham said.
During the time she started writing the book, Perham’s own life was filled with many ups and many downs, starting with the death of her oldest son.
“You never quite get over it. I think you carry it the rest of your life that your son died,” said Perham.
In 2005, her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and for the next seven years was his primary caregiver, pushing through significant changes in their life and marriage. Ultimately her husband lost the fight in 2012.
Her family says while learning to cope with these loses, she became more focused than ever on her writing and the dream of becoming published.
“The Runner” was published this summer.
Perham has already started focusing on her next book which will be a collection of novellas, scheduled to be published sometime next Spring.
