NEW YORK STATE (WSYR-TV) — Sports betters can now legally lay down money in New York State. A casino in Schenectady became the first in the state to take wagers on sports events. It is a process that’s been years in the making and was criticized for taking too long.
“We watched other states pass us by in the left lane. Those days taking about our state and sports betting as a disabled car stops today,” said State Senate Racing and Wagering Committee member Joseph Addabbo.
“All the time I’ve lived in the City of Schenectady, it’s been here. It’s just not public,” said Schenectady resident Michael Ottati.
Now, sports betting is out of the shadows and in the spotlight at Rivers Casino.
In case you were wondering, the first legal bet was placed on the Seattle Seahawks.
