NORTH SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) — With the weather turning warmer, and the landscape turning greener, you may be thinking about getting you hands dirty in the garden.

Chuck Hafner’s Garden Center says you can do so, just proceed with caution.

Syracuse has seen snow on Mother’s day and frost in the middle of May. As long as you know how to take care of your plants, then you have the green light to get started.

KNOW THE LANDSCAPE:

Jess Hafner, General Manager at Chuck Hafner’s Garden Center, says if you have shurbs already planted from previous years, they will survive a frost. Anything ‘waking up’ on Mother Nature’s schedule shouldn’t be harmed.

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE GARDEN:

If you’re buying shrubs or perrenials that have more color than your current landscape, then you’re going to need to give them a little more TLC (tender loving care).

If we have a night within the next 3-4 weeks where the sky is forecast to be clear, the winds light, and temperatures in the 30s or below, you’ll want to take meausres to protect from frost.

PROTECTING PLANTS FROM THE COLD:

If the above weather conditions exist, you’ll want to grab an empty recyclying bin/trash can or t-shirt/fabric sheet.

For tall plants, Hafner says you can simply put your empty recycling can over it for the night. For smaller plants, you can take a fabric sheet (or two if it is supposed to get super cold) and cover them. Both these household items will create a shield for the sinking cold air.

Hafner says if you have any questions about the plants you purchase you can always call the garden center and a staff member will be happy to help.
