SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) Syracuse Police have identified the two young men killed in a fiery crash along Erie Boulevard East and Lodi Street on Monday night as 22-year-old Tawakal Rashid and 14-year-old Musbah Hassan of Syracuse.
Investigators say Rashid was going nearly three times the posted speed limit, when he lost control of his Nissan, hitting a light pole and a tree, before the car burst into flames.
Syracuse Police say Rashid was racing a dark colored SUV at the time, but there is no evidence the two vehicles made contact at any time before the crash.
Police are trying to identify that driver and ask anyone with information to call 315-442-5151
According to a Facebook post from the Islamic Society of Central New York, Rashid and Hassan were brothers. A prayer vigil was planned for them on Thursday afternoon.
