Police: Young girl hit by stray bullet in Utica

Local News

UTICA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Utica Police Department is investigating a shooting that injured a 10-year-old girl while she was sleeping in bed.

Police were called to the 1300 block of Lincoln Avenue early Friday morning, regarding a possible injury from a gunshot.  When they arrived, police found the young girl was struck in the arm by gunfire.  They believe someone was shooting outside the home in the street when one of the stray rounds went through a second-floor apartment and hit the female while she was sleeping in bed.

Police say evidence was located in the street where the gunfire occurred.

The 10-year-old girl is being treated for her non-life threatening injury.

Utica Police are also investigating a separate shooting that sent a man to the hospital.  Officers say the victim walked into St. Elizabeth Hospital Emergency Room with a gunshot wound to his leg on Thursday.

The victim told officers that he was walking in the area of 1000 block of Kossuth Avenue when he heard gunfire and was struck in the leg.  He immediately drove himself to the hospital.

Officers responded to the area described by the victim and located evidence of shots fired in the roadway.  The victim was ultimately transported to Upstate Medical in Syracuse to be treated for his non-life threatening injury.

Both incidents are being investigated by the Utica Police Criminal Investigations Division and the Major Crimes Unit.  If anyone has any information related to these incidents, they are urged to contact the Utica Police Department at (315) 223-3510.  All calls can be kept confidential.
