PORT BYRON, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The keen eye of a Port Byron native has made him the proud owner of a priceless baseball card. Experts say it is the only one of its kind and it was purchased for only $2.
Dale Ball, who grew up in Port Byron, is an avid card collector. He found the card on the west coast.
“The world seems like it has turned upside down after this card came into my possession and became my son’s and mine,” he said.
The card is of Babe Ruth, arguably the most iconic baseball player of all-time. Fate brought Ball and the card together. He was in Nevada back in February and helped a woman during a snowstorm.
“She was trying to get her chains on her car. They were going to charge her quite a bit of money to put her chains on her car and she didn’t have it to be able to do it.” Ball said the woman paid him in collectible coins. He then took those to a collector shop where he saw the Ruth card hiding behind another legend.
Ball says after a little research, he found out the card is one of a kind. He has paper to prove it’s from the 1920s and it’s official. He didn’t want to get into specifics, but he did say he has been offered ” a lot” of money for it.
“That is a Mona Lisa,” Ball said. “That is a one of one. He said there is no price for it and to me there is really not. It is something I bought for my son. It is not something I want to part with really.”
The card was actually made for a board game that never ended up being produced. On the back is information about the manufacturer, not stats.
