President Donald Trump arrived at Fort Drum around 2 p.m. on Monday to have a signing ceremony for H.R. 5515, John McCain National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2019.
Trump has consistently expressed his desire to grow the military.
Most of those present were active military members and their families.
Vice President Mike Pence was also present at Fort Drum.
Pence opened up the President’s speech with praise for the 10th Mountain Division and assurance that the United States will have the strongest military in history.
“President Donald Trump always puts our Armed Forces and your families first.”
President Trump kicked off his speech several minutes before 3 p.m., praising Fort Drum, members of Congress, and thanking certain service men and women.
“National Defense Authorization Act is the most significant investment in our military’s history. Survival of our freedom depends on the might of our military,” Trump said.
The National Defense Authorization Act allows $716 billion to go toward military equipment like ships and weapons, and adding more active service men and women.
Throughout his speech, the President praised his accomplishments while in office, citing low unemployment rates, increased industrial jobs and a strong military.
