SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Members of the Puerto Rican community joined together with Syracuse city officials as the Salt City held a flag-raising ceremony in front of City Hall.
Music and dancing helped to celebrate Puerto Rico’s Constitution Day. The people of Puerto Rico all have a love for their country, known as Patria. And while they accept the free association with the U.S., they emphasize loyalty to their own culture, life, and heritage.
“We’ve had a lot of challenges in our life. We’re going through a lot of challenges right now on the island as well, so we just want to come together. It’s important to show unity, especially now that the island has faced so many challenges beyond Maria, recent events as well,” said Elisa Morales, Executive Director of the Spanish Action League.
Many people forced from the island after Hurricane Maria now call Syracuse their home.
