NEW YORK STATE (WSYR-TV) — A man who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1991 has died, according to the Innocence Project.

Roy Brown was sent to state prison for 15 years for the murder of Sabina Kulakowski in Cayuga County. He served 15 years before DNA evidence proved he wasn’t the killer.

Brown was later released from prison in 2007 and New York State agreed to pay him $2.6 million in compensation.

The Innocence Project released a statement on Facebook that reads:

The Innocence Project took on Brown’s case in 2005 and through DNA testing, excluded Brown from the murder.
