Senator Charles Schumer is addressing the growing opioid crisis and warning New Yorkers about a deadly cocktail that’s proving far more lethal than heroin alone.
“As bad as it’s been, it’s getting worse. That’s because there’s a new super drug hitting the scene called fentanyl. Fentanyl is a chemical, it’s added to heroin, but it is 50 to 100 times more potent,” Sen. Schumer said.
Schumer is pressuring the federal government to crack down on the amount of fentanyl entering the country. He wants high-tech tools at the border to intercept the drug before it hits the streets.
In Onondaga County, fentanyl-related deaths doubled last year, compared to 2015, and the drug accounted for more than a third of all opioid-related deaths.
