Senators pushing FEMA to prepare disaster declaration for Lake Ontario

Local News

NEW YORK STATE (WSYR-TV) — Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are calling on FEMA to get ready for flooding.

The senators say the federal agency needs to quickly approve a disaster declaration if the water levels continue to rise on Lake Ontario.

This comes as the international body that monitors the lake’s level says the water is reaching a near-record high and will continue to rise.

An emergency declaration would free up grant money for state and local governments to help with things like repairs.
