Syracuse Police have arrested a man in connection with a “suspicious death” that occurred inside a home on Holland Street.
Police were called to 144 Holland Street just before noon on Thursday and found a woman dead inside.
Law enforcement responded to the home after her employers indicated she hadn’t shown up for work.
The victim has been identified as 54-year-old Valerie Crowder.
A neighbor spoke with NewsChannel 9 on Thursday, saying the neighborhood is close, and that Valeries’s death has had a great impact on them.
One neighbor described Valerie as a “sweet, gentle, loving, compassionate woman, [who] cared about children, and she cared about her own.”
She was also a teacher’s assistant and long time employee at the Syracuse City School District.
“Mrs. Crowder was a long time employee of the Syracuse City School District. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this very difficult time,” the district said in a statement
Crowder’s son, 27-year-old Darrien Howard, was charged with second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
According to court documents, Howard stabbed Crowder several times, which resulted in her death.
Howard was located and arrested in Endicott.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 13.
