SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Syracuse Police Department is looking for grant funding to get all of its crime cameras on the same network.
Syracuse Police confirm when the Syracuse City School District had network issues in July, that cyber-event cut the connection to some of the cameras SPD uses near schools to keep kids safe. Police tell us they missed out on two major incidents. They had no visuals for those incidents. The cases were solved despite no visual aid from the cameras.
The Department is asking for a $50,000 grant to get all of the cameras on the same network.
“We are going to try and start running fiberoptics through firehouses so we can connect our cops cameras to these firehouses,” said Joseph Cecile, First Deputy Chief for Syracuse Police.
The Syracuse Common Council heard Cecile’s proposal Wednesday and is now considering it.
