OSWEGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- A little over a year after the initial announcement, the Syracuse Diocese has decided on a site for the multi-parish merger in Oswego.
On May 15, Bishop Robert Cunningham accepted the consensus-based recommendation that St. Paul's Church would become the home of Christ the Good Shepard Parish.
The consolidation involves all five Catholic parishes in the Oswego area-- St. Paul, St. Stephen, St. Joseph, St. Mary and St. Peter.
The unification of the parishes of Oswego will begin on July 1 and will be celebrated at Masses on July 6-7.
Any changes will begin on July 1. Until then, every parish will maintain its current Mass schedule and all parish programs and scheduled events will continue as currently planned.
In 2018, The Syracuse Diocese told NewsChannel 9 that declining populations of worshipping Catholics prompted the move toward merging the parishes.
St. Paul's Church is located at 50 East Mohawk Street in Oswego.
The Diocese is working on determining new uses for the old buildings.
