LEE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) New York State Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in the Town of Lee.
Troopers were called to a home on Golly Road in the town of Lee Tuesday night around 8:30 pm for a 911 medical call for an overdose of a 24-year-old man.
A preliminary investigation revealed Trooper Robert Annarino arrived on scene and was directed to a back bedroom of the residence where he encountered a man, 24-year-old Tyler Johnson face down on the bed, with his hand clinched underneath his chest.
Family members on the scene advised that the subject was possibly suffering from a seizure.
Johnson had a knife clenched underneath him, according to State Police.
State Police say Johnson came at a trooper with a knife, forcing the trooper to defend himself, an Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy and EMS personnel.
Troopers say Johnson was asked several times to drop the knife and allegedly refused. The trooper fired seven rounds.
It is unknown if Johnson had his weapon drawn at the time.
State Police say Johnson may have been suffering from depression but did not elaborate.
A few members of the family were present during the incident.
Johnson was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital where he later died.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death and how many times Johnson was shot.
