VAN BUREN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — New York State Police are investigating what they are classifying a homicide after a 74-year-old woman was found dead inside of her home at the Village Green Apartment Complex in the Town of Van Buren.

According to New York State Police, the call initially came in as a domestic incident at 9:39 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers say the daughter of the victim arrived at Apartment 684 to check on her mother Tuesday morning. That’s when she found her mother deceased in her bedroom.

New York State Police, deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, and EMS Ambulance all responded.

The mother lives at the apartment with the son. The son has been taken in for questioning but is not yet a suspect, according to NYS Police.

According to Trooper Jack Keller, the death is considered suspicious and the investigation leads to foul play.

I can’t get into specifics, but indicators not only from the victim but from other people inside the residence fear something more happened than just a possible natural death. There are some indicators, and I can’t get into specifics of why we believe so, so we’re going to treat it as a suspicious death and treat it as a homicide until we can determine otherwise.”

As of Tuesday evening, NYS Police are still on the scene continuing to investigate. There is no threat to the public as this is an isolated incident.

However, one neighbor we spoke with who lives at the Village Green Apartment Complex said she’s worried.

“I’ve owned the place for 35 years…Up until now, I felt safe here. I honestly don’t know what happened, but I do not feel safe here anymore.”
