The fast growing workforce in downtown Syracuse has just expanded again with Syracuse University bringing one of its departments to the heart of the City.
SU has consolidated its Marketing and Communications department into the entire second floor of The Warehouse on the edge of Armory Square.
Prior to the move the department was spread out in six different buildings on campus.
Lisa Andreotta is Senior Associate Vice President of Operations for the department.
She says, “We’ve been able to get to collaborate more, we’re able to just pick up and walk over to your colleague and ask a question or come up with an idea and bounce things off of each other so it’s been a really great experience for us.”
Andreotta says they’re hoping technology, like video conferencing, will help them overcome not being on campus anymore.
Besides bringing the department together, Andreotta says it’s bringing the University closer to the community, including the many restaurants and shops downtown.
“Marketing and Communications Division, we’re hoping that we’re going to be more integrated with the community. We’ll hopefully be able to engage in activities that are going on around the City. There’s an Earth Day event coming up in the next few weeks and we’re hoping we can be part of that, things like that,” she tells NewsChannel 9.
The department currently employs about 75 people and is adding jobs which will bring it closer to 90 by the end of June.
Just over a decade ago Syracuse University purchased the old Dunk and Bright furniture warehouse and converted it into academic space for some of it’s design programs, among others.
