While a lot of spring breakers are escaping to warmer weather this week, others are choosing a different route.
Several students at Syracuse University have opted to roll up their sleeves and volunteer at local community groups instead of rolling out a towel on the beach.
“It’s not related to their studies at all. They’re just filling their spring break with volunteering,” said Meals on Wheels Community Relations Director, Michael Norton.
On Tuesday the students assisted at the Samaritan Center and the Food Bank of Central New York; Wednesday they were at Meals on Wheels.
“I know that I could have stayed home stayed in my dorm like just you know watching Netflix but I think it’s very rewarding that you can go out and do service for the community,” said Sophomore Brianna Gonzalez.
The program is organized through Hendricks Chapel and students like Aronys Perez say even if people can give an hour or an afternoon – the time will be well spent.
