SUNY Canton leading the charge, embracing eSports

Local News

It’s not what usually comes to mind when you think college sports.

But more and more schools are adding eSports to their athletic departments, including SUNY Canton.

SUNY Canton is home to one of the largest gaming arenas in the Northeast, a first of its kind in the SUNY system.

“We were literally a year ago just thinking this eSports thing might be a good idea and it has just absolutely taken off,” said SUNY Canton athletic director Randy Sieminski.

The arena has 25 high-end gaming rigs for students to compete in online games like Overwatch, FIFA, League of Legends, Fortnite, and many others.

Students are held to the same standards as traditional student-athletes.

My Dang, a Cicero-North Syracuse graduate and freshman at Canton, says the school’s gaming arena and eSports were the main reason for his college decision.

“I think in the very near future that many colleges around the states will be able to see that Esports, this whole eSports thing as an actual part of the college experience and I think it will eventually grow to become a behemoth,” Dang said.
