SUNY Oswego’s enrollment results after first round of the Excelsior Scholarship

Local News

Critics of the Excelsior Scholarship worried about too many students, overcrowded dorms and overloaded classes, but there doesn’t seem to be any problems at SUNY Oswego.

President Deborah Stanley tells NewsChannel 9, “Well that’s really a misunderstanding about what Excelsior is. We still have our entrance criteria. You still have to apply to SUNY Oswego.”

About 11,700 did apply, the most ever in SUNY Oswego history, but freshmen enrollment is about the same.

2017: 1,479
2016: 1,441
2015: 1,486
2014: 1,417

Stanley says, “I don’t think it was ever intended to bring in more students. Overall in the state, I hope it does bring in more students… but, no it really didn’t affect our overall numbers.”
