SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — This is a huge weekend that can make or break a year for any hotel or restaurant in the Syracuse area.
Syracuse University graduation alone brings tens of thousands of people to town.
“All of the SU big events are, but graduation in particular people book two years out so it’s a big deal,” says Melissa Oliver, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown,
Rates at many hotels, like the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, are more than double their usual price and usually require at least a two-night stay.
Oliver tells NewsChannel 9, “SU graduation, for not just us, but the hotel community overall is the weekend that makes or breaks your year. So incredibly important, taken very seriously, all hands on deck. It is the huge driver of the rest of the year revenue-wise.”
It’s not just the hotels but the restaurants gearing up too for this triple play weekend.
There is SU graduation, Book of Mormon playing at the Landmark Theatre and Mother’s Day on Sunday.
Empire Brewing Company’s Downtown Syracuse General Manager Ashley Liner says, “We do look forward to it. We look forward to the families coming because they’re normally here for Parents Weekend then they come back for Graduation weekend and they call months before to get their reservations.”
And while most of the staff at Empire in Armory Square has been through this weekend before the head brewer has not.
Matthew Ducey just moved here six months ago from Washington D.C.
“I’ve been hearing a lot about it. I personally am very excited, all I know it gets a little crazy, there’s gonna be a lot of people down here and everybody says I’ll be a busy boy,” Ducey says.
