Syracuse Hancock International Airport renovation complete

Local News

The major renovation of Syracuse Hancock International Airport is finished, on time.

The 8-month long project completely transforms the outside of the facility, especially with a brand new glass facade.

It also modernizes the inside before the security checkpoint, including a fresh new main hall.

State and local officials say the project not only transforms the building but also the identity of the entire region.

Syracuse Airport Executive Director Christina Callahan tells NewsChannel 9, “We always said a thriving region needs a thriving airport.  As the gateway to Central New York we want people who visit us to be wowed but we also want peope who live here to be proud of the airport and I think we’ve achieved that.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo set an aggressive schedule to get this done by the end of October and he was back to cut the ribbon on the project that he sees as a real economic engine for Central New York.

“For tourism to come here, for new businesses to come here, for people to visit, its about the airport.  The airport is the new front door,” The Governor says.

Airport Authority Chair Patrick Mannion adds, “I can tell you the one thing you’ll see people do here, stop at this wall and take a selfie with the SYR, for some reason that SYR is really compelling, and that’s a great thing.”

The roads leading up to and in front of the terminal are back open again for drop off and pick up.
