SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Buying school supplies can be costly for many families, making an annual giveaway more important year after year.
For the 18th year in a row, the Mary Nelson Youth Center Back to School Supply giveaway was held on Saturday near Sankofa Park.
Families took home backpacks, books, pencils, and even groceries to get them ready for the school year.
“Being a single parent, the littlest things are the best things. It’s a great deal to have help through the community,” said Lovashia Bush, who took part in the giveaway. “You know when we can all come together and have help and help each other.”
The smiles on the faces of the little ones made it all worth it for those who have been putting this together alongside Mary Nelson for decades.
“What you really see is you see relief from parents. If you really want to make a person feel really great, you take care of their children,” said Pastor Mark Haywood with the Abundant Life Christian Center.
The event took place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday near Sankofa Park.
Nelson said she stopped counting the number of backpacks when she reached three thousand.
